What Is RSD?
6th November 2018
RSD stands for Regional Sympathetic Dystrophy. McGill Pain Index has ranked it as the most painful form of chronic pain. If you have RSD, there are some common symptoms. According to the New York State Department of Health, “the key symptom is, chronic, intense pain that is out of proportion to the severity of the injury and which gets worse over time rather than better.” The most commonly affected areas of your body include: arms, legs, hands or feet.
Symptoms of RSD
- Pain that is burning
- Skin sensitivity especially when touched
- Motor disability
- Joint swelling and stiffness
- Nail and hair growth pattern changes
- Changes in skin (sweaty, shiny, color, temperature and thin)
The exact cause of RSD is not fully understood. It is thought to happen when your nerve is damaged in the sympathetic nervous system. Contributing factors may include trauma, surgery, infection, burns, radiation therapy, and/or paralysis on one side of your body. RSD has also been associated with disorders of the spine. It is most common among people between the ages of 40 and 60.
Physical therapy has been the primary component of treatment for RSD, however Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles offers and alternative approach. Ketamine infusion treatments are an effective treatment for those who suffer from chronic pain, including those with RSD.
